How Does Dry Cleaning Kill Bacteria & Viruses?
Wednesday, August 19, 2020

Dry cleaning and laundry kills viruses and bacteria in your clothing and bedding in four different ways:

Hot water: According to the WHO (World Health Organization) temperatures of 140 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit kill most viruses. Pathogens don’t like high heat!

Soap and mechanical action: In much the same way that you kill the virus by washing your hands with soap singing "Happy Birthday" for 20 seconds, dry cleaning machines wash your clothes with soap and mechanical action that breaks down viruses. In addition, the compounds in the soap remove viruses and bacteria, which then rinse down the drain.

Disinfectants: For cold water washes, to make up for lack of hot water temperatures, dry cleaners use supplementary organic disinfectants like hydrogen peroxide, which kills viruses and bacteria. A cold wash with disinfectants still means viruses and bacteria are destroyed during the process.

Drying with high temperatures: Dry cleaning is heat dried and/or heat pressed at temperatures up to 220 degrees, hot enough to kill any known virus. If the hot water, soap, and disinfectants didn’t get rid of the germs, the final drying process surely will.
